Does trimmer line get brittle with age?

Some manufacturers say nylon line can lose flexibility as it ages or dries. Their storage and soaking recommendations are product guidance with a brand and manual boundary, not a universal rule for every polymer, spool, or powered tool.

Check your exact manual first. This page does not authorize a different line diameter, head, or loading method. Never soak a battery, powered tool, or complete cutting head based on advice about line or a removable spool.

What Husqvarna says

Husqvarna US support for battery-powered trimmers and brushcutters says line can become brittle over time, especially when exposed to sunlight. Its support answer recommends storing line in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and says soaking the line overnight before use can restore flexibility.

This is general Husqvarna support guidance, not a specification for every Husqvarna model or every aftermarket line. Check the operator manual for the exact tool/head before changing how you store or load a spool.

What STIHL says

STIHL’s line-replacement guidance, published May 18, 2024, says line may lose moisture and elasticity over time. It recommends soaking STIHL trimmer line in water for 24 hours before use; its article says line can remain wound on the spool during soaking.

That is STIHL guidance. It does not establish that soaking is appropriate for EGO, Husqvarna, Greenworks, generic line, or every STIHL head. Treat the article as advice about line/spool only: do not immerse a powered tool, battery, or complete head unless the exact manual explicitly directs that procedure.

A cautious decision path

  1. Identify the line brand/material, tool model, region, and installed head.
  2. Read the exact manual for storage, loading, and any soaking instructions. The manual takes precedence over a general support article.
  3. If the applicable manufacturer supports soaking, follow its stated duration and handle only the line or spool that it names.
  4. After storage or soaking, inspect the line for damage and load it exactly as the head manual describes. Do not infer a new diameter or profile from a change in flexibility.
  5. If the line still breaks, check the fitment and breakage guides; line age is only one possible factor, not a diagnosis.

What this evidence does not establish

The Husqvarna support page does not display a publication date; it was checked October 20, 2026. The STIHL article is dated May 18, 2024 and was checked October 20, 2026. This guide does not replace the product’s current regional manual.
