EGO ST1520 POWERLOAD line will not wind

If the line enters the head but will not wind when you press the loading button, use this source-scoped checklist. The button winds line onto the spool; bump-feed advancement is a separate task.

Scope: North American EGO ST1520 or ST1520S with its POWERLOAD bump head. Confirm the tool label, installed head, and manual revision. This guide does not cover LineIQ models, other POWERLOAD tools, or replacement heads.

First confirm the symptom and equipment

This path is for line that does not wind onto the spool after using the line-loading button. If you need more line while trimming, use the exact manual's line-advance instructions instead. Clicking, spinning, or silence alone does not identify a failed part or establish a cause.

Checks in the V5 troubleshooting table

The manual lists several possible reasons the line cannot be wound properly: line length, line type, debris blocking spool movement, winding-motor overheating after repeated use, and low battery. These are checks from the manual, not a diagnosis of your unit.

  1. If line will not pass through the eyelet, check the cut end. The manual says a split or bent end can prevent insertion. Remove the battery first, cut off the worn end, then reinsert it following the full manual procedure.
  2. If it threads but will not wind, check the exposed line length. For this exact model/head, the troubleshooting table says to leave about 5.5 inches (14 cm) showing on each side. Follow the manual's reload sequence and keep the battery removed while handling the line.
  3. Verify the line material and diameter. The manual recommends EGO original nylon line no greater than 0.095 inch (2.4 mm). If you use EGO nylon line and the issue persists, the manual directs you to EGO customer service. Do not treat the maximum as a target or infer fit for another head.
  4. Check for debris only as the manual directs. The V5 table lists grass debris or dirt blocking spool movement as a possible cause. Remove the battery, then open and clean the head only by following the complete manual. Stop if the fitted head differs, is damaged, or you cannot identify it.
  5. Consider heat and battery state. The manual lists overheating from repeatedly operating the winding system and a low battery as possible causes. Follow its safe cooling and charging instructions before retrying; do not run the tool with the head open or its guard removed.

When to stop and contact EGO

If the supported line is loaded according to the exact manual and the problem continues, or the head is damaged, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Do not force the line, hold parts to counter-rotate them, bypass a switch, or open the motor housing based on forum advice.
